My Dog Blog

Helping People and Dogs Live in Harmony

My dog blog is an opportunity for me to share anything and everything of value to dog ownership. From newborn puppies, to the senior dogs and every age and stage in between, I’ve been asked the questions. Here, I plan to give some answers, or at the very least point you in the direction of such.

What’s in a name?

The name for my blog came to me from a silly saying we always do with our dogs. I have just talked to them like that when it was time to do something. Dinner time, oh doggo my doggo, bedtime, oh doggo my doggo… when it came to me as a blog name, I had to wrack my brain on where it came from.

How do you search for something online, that you don’t have the first clue what to enter?

How do you search for something online, that you don’t have the first clue what to enter? I guess I lucked out from trying.

The familiar (to me) line I had inadvertently converted to dog lingo, “O Captain my Captain,” is the opening line from a poem written by Walt Whitman in 1865. The poem was introduced to students at the Welton Academy boarding school by English teacher John Keating.

It was Robin Williams in the movie “Dead Poets Society” in 1989 who popularized it again.
The poem itself was one of Whitman’s tributes to then president Abraham Lincoln in the days after Lincoln’s death.

For me, after watching the Dead Poets Society, it spoke of rebellion, defiance, and loyalty to one.

oDoggoMyDoggo is a silly saying, but it’s one filled with affection for my dogs, and I guess that’s the root of my passion for this blog.

I loved reading the origin story behind oDoggoMyDoggo. The way a goofy little “dinner time” phrase ties back to “O Captain my Captain” and Dead Poets Society made me smile. It’s such a sweet reminder that the small, everyday words we use with our dogs can carry a lot of love. Do your dogs perk up when you say it, like it’s their cue that something fun is about to happen?
